Total Temporary is a multidisciplinary artist collective and experimental project that originated from a multicultural dialogue among its three core members: Hiroyasu Tsuri, Joshua Murphy, and Christiania Krueger. The collective's inception was rooted in discussions surrounding profound topics such as life and death, exploring diverse philosophies and ideologies surrounding these universal themes across different cultures. Drawing inspiration from traditional ceremonies practiced worldwide, which often incorporate elements such as sound, lighting, objects, and body movements, Total Temporary embarked on a mission to study and reinterpret these traditions. Through a process of remixing and reinterpreting, they transformed ancient rituals into modern multicultural rituals expressed through multimedia artistic mediums including sound, audio-visual, and performance arts.
Christiania Krueger (Born 1980 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, North Africa ) is a film artist, working mainly within the surrealist realm. Christiania mixes different techniques, such as filming with macro lenses, stop motion, digital, analog films, and cinematography.
Hiroyasu Tsuri (Born 1985 in Yokohama, Japan , Asia) is a contemporary artist who works in Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography, Video, Performance, and sound. Tsuri is also known as TWOONE for his extra-large scale Public murals around the world.
Joshua Murphy (Born 1985 in Ballarat, Australia, Oceania) is a musician, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter, music label founder, predominantly working with Guitar, Piano, and voice.
The strength of Total Temporary lies in their collaborative approach. Their project emphasises connection, knowledge sharing, and understanding, fostering an environment of mutual respect for cultural diversity. Through collaboration, they navigate the complexities of cultural traditions, merging their unique perspectives to create contemporary interpretations that honour and celebrate the richness of global heritage.
In addition to their individual talents, they share a deep connection to their cultural heritages, shaping their creative endeavours. Hiroyasu Tsuri draws inspiration from his exposure to traditional Japanese art forms like "Kagura," a dance and music performance rooted in local beliefs. Christiania Krueger's upbringing immersed her in the folk music of the Canary Islands, a unique blend of aboriginal music, peninsular influence, and Caribbean rhythms. Joshua Murphy's periodic exposure to the cultural heritage of Australia's First Nations people included ceremonies characterised by ritualistic music and dances.
Since their formation in 2018 in Berlin, Germany, Total Temporary has been actively creating artworks and captivating audiences with their live performances across Europe since 2019. In 2021, they debuted their first exhibition titled "Total Temporary A-UN" at the Urban Spree Gallery in Berlin, Germany. The exhibition featured an installation showcasing a fusion of painting, projection, sound installation, video work, and their inaugural vinyl record "A-UN". During their residency, they continued to push artistic boundaries, developing new performances and screen prints, while also engaging in open studio sessions, offering compelling insights into their collaborative creative process. Moreover, Total Temporary's artistic ethos is deeply rooted in the exchange of diverse cultural knowledge. Their exploration of traditional ceremonies reflects a commitment to cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, embodying the essence of contemporary globalisation. The collective members' shared experiences of relocation from their homelands to Germany have enriched their artistic practice, with music serving as a universal means of communication. Total Temporary Collaboratively, navigate and celebrate the differences and similarities in cultural traditions, crafting contemporary multicultural ceremonies that pay homage to nature and evoke a sense of awe and respect.
